Ashwagandha, scientifically known as Withania somnifera, is an important herb in traditional Ayurvedic medicine.
Ashwagandha is a sub-tropical plant and thrives in warm, dry climates and is often cultivated in well-drained soil with plenty of sunlight. Ideal growing conditions include temperatures between 20°C and 30°C and minimal rainfall. In the UK it grows best undercover such as in a polytunnel or greenhouse. Ashwagandha can be perennial, but a root harvest can be taken in the autumn of the first year.
