Catnip

Nepeta cataria

£5.50

Nepeta cataria, commonly known as catnip, is a herbaceous perennial herb that typically grows up to 1 meter tall. It has small, white to pale lavender flowers in summer - other species of Nepeta have blue flowers and are commonly grown as ornamentals, but this is the white flowered species. Catnip has an upright, bushy habit and spreads readily in gardens and wild areas, often favored by cats for its stimulating effects, and should be protected from cats in the spring as the new leaves emerge, if there are cats in the garden.

It thrives best in well-drained soil with full sun to partial shade and is tolerant of a wide range of growing conditions, including drought once established.

Nepeta cataria has been traditionally used to relieve anxiety, promote digestion, and alleviate cold symptoms. It is great for pollinators, makes a lovely dried herb for teas and for making cat toys.
