Echinacea (angustifolila)
Echinacea angustifolia (1 litre pot)
£5.50
Echinacea angustifolia is a herbaceous perennial with pale pink flowers and long narrow leaves. It is less commonly grown in the UK than the closely related E. purpurea, and is slightly more challenged by wet winters, but well worth a try. It is great for pollinators, as a cut flower and a well regarded medicinal herb, with a long tradition of use in Indigenous North American medicine.
They prefer well drained soil and full sun. In a heavy soil they grow best in a raised bed or if grit is added to the bed, as their roots can rot over winter in overly-wet soil. They grow 60-150cm tall. Protect from slugs in early growth. Roots can be harvested for medicinal use after 3 to 4 years of growth and the main crown replanted.
