Acorus calamus, commonly known as sweet flag, is a perennial wetland plant. It has tall, sword-shaped leaves and aromatic rhizomes with a spicy, sweet scent. It typically grows in marshes, along pond edges, and in wet soils, forming dense clumps that can reach up to 1.5 meters (5 feet) tall. The plant prefers moist to wet, nutrient-rich soils and thrives in full sun to partial shade, commonly found in temperate and subtropical regions.
Medicinally, Acorus calamus is used widely in Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine systems. Its rhizomes contain essential oils and compounds believed to have antiseptic, carminative, and mild sedative effects.
